Creative methods in social research, two day workshop, 1-2 December 2008

On 1-2 December, David Gauntlett is leading an ESRC-supported two-day workshop in London, exploring creative visual methods in a hands-on way. This is a chance to spend a day doing the Lego Serious Play method (which you can read about on this site), and another day trying out other metaphorical making-things approaches.

The event is organised by the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM). There are just 16 places, so book now if you'd like to do it. For information see these pages on the NCRM site.

Event Title: Creative methods in social research

Date: 1-2 December 2008 (2 Day Event)

Venue: In the Northampton Suite within University Building, City University, London (see close-up map and broader map)

Event Description:
This workshop is for social researchers interested in new forms of qualitative research. It will introduce research processes in which participants are asked to make something as part of the process, based on the idea that giving people a creative activity to do encourages them to prepare a considered response, which they can reflect upon and perhaps revise, before they are asked to discuss it with a researcher. For instance, the task of preparing a collage, a set of photographs, or a three-dimensional model, leads people to consider a research question in a different way, and can produce insightful responses. The use of visual metaphors can add a further dimension to such activities.

Workshop participants will have the opportunity to experience some of these methods for themselves, and to try out ways in which such methods may be adapted to their own research interests. This is a 'hands on' workshop, limited to 16 participants.

The Workshop Leader:
The workshop will be led by David Gauntlett, Professor of Media and Communications, University of Westminster. He is the author of several books, including Creative Explorations: New approaches to identities and audiences (2007).

Event Outline:
Day one: We begin with an introduction to creative methods, and some examples. Participants will then spend the rest of the day engaged in a Lego Serious Play workshop. This is a process in which participants build metaphorical models in Lego, and are thereby able to communicate about their relationship to social issues, organisations, people, or concepts.

Day two: We will reflect on the previous day's experience, and then try out a selection of other methods which build on some of the same principles. We will consider how these methods might be deployed in the specific areas which the workshop participants are interested in.

Target Audience:
This workshop is open to anyone who is interested in these techniques and thinks that they might be useful in exploring their own research questions.

Fee:
£40 - For UK registered postgraduate students
£
80 - For staff at UK academic institutions, ESRC funded researchers and registered charity organisations
£350 - For all other participants

All fees include event materials, lunch, morning and afternoon tea/coffee. They do not include travel and accommodation costs.

Deadlines and Refunds:
Places are limited and early completion of the booking form is recommended. (Please check the NCRM website to see if places are still available).
